Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session. Today we read Sections 1002, 1008, 1009, and 1016 From Barbara: This was a very complex meeting. We went into Juan Balboa's translation of Proclus' Commentary on Plato's Parmenides, Book 5. We made copies of what Juan calls “The 24 Eleatic Dialectical Variations” 1002 and later the dialectic on Providence--Section 1016. We were pursuing the idea of “Self” and its frequency in the Dialectic method...

Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session. Today we read Hypothesis 8 Attendees Pierre, Barbara, JulieH, Regina Highlights We pursued the same goal, asking how Philosophic Midwifery would map over the major points of the eighth hypothesis. Pierre started us from 164E, but due to a question we went back to P8-09. There was a new chart and Pierre also went back and developed a different point on the bottom of the previous 9-23 Chart. Attendees Pierre, JulieH, Regina, Barbara Highlights We worked solely on the 8th Hypothesis exploring it to see if PMW (philosophical midwifery) and Pierre's concept of the pathologos could be mapped over all the major distinctions of the Eighth. Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session. Today we read the 4th Hypothesis. Attendees Pierre, David, Regina, Barbara Highlights We started again at 158B, at the beginning of Hypothesis 4 and I labored at making a fine distinction, but didn't. Then we picked up where we had left off and went to the end of the Fourth or 159B. Pierre was pursuing the question, if there's, in fact, reasoning by examination, and reasoning by Logos which is also based on...

Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session. Today we read Prologue, 157e, 157b Attendees Pierre, Barbara, JulieH, Regina Notes from Barbara: We used the chart everyday world/Realm of Being (otherwise called the 3 now 4 date chart). We added a bit to it. Pierre also added to the chart from Monday after first drawing a line to divide the page. No one had a camera for various reasons. First we reviewed Monday's work 157E, P4-12. Reasoning by Logos. Then...

Today we read Prologue 136b, Hyp4 157e Attendees Pierre, Barbara, Regina, JulieH From Barbara: We reviewed Parmenides account of “Zeno's” exercise to attain truth, part 3, 136B5. We then went to Hypothesis 4 and explored the question “How are Others talked about?” (We found 12 characteristics). Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session. Today we read Parmenides 127e,137a; Commentary Book 5 Attendees Pierre, Barbara, JulieH, David, Regina Notes from Barbara Pierre put these notes on a new chart. With the 12 points of Socrates (at 127E) and applying the four points of Zeno's Dialectic (at 137A) it should be possible to understand and resolve Socrates' 12 points by reconciling them with Parmenides 9 Hypotheses. (So we started looking at the...

Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session. Today we read Prologue 129a-130b Attendees Pierre, Barbara, David, Regina, JulieH Highlights [From Barbara] Pierre made a new chart and added a few notes to Monday's chart. We started just above 129A and went to 130B. We went through Socrates' puzzles about Zeno's position, and Pythodoras' reaction, what he expected Parmenides and Zeno to think about the puzzles. Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session. Today we read Prologue 127e onward; First Hypothesis P1-6 Attendees Pierre, Barbara, David, JulieH, Gina From Barbara: Pierre asked us to start by examining the first 6 passages of the first Hypothesis and point out the illogical nature of it. So we started at 137C. Though we discussed the quote Pierre put up on Friday night, i.e. “The idea of each Being is always the Self,” we come to it more clearly...

Synopsis As is some times the case, the evening began impromptu: Only a few had so far trickled in, so Pierre picked up conversations with each of us to see what we are into. He landed on JulieH, who had finished her transcripts of the July 4th (NSSPE) and 6th (NSSAT) gatherings, and had brought along a copy of the July 6th transcript. The discussion was not on camera, but Regina and I caught it on our audio-recorders.  In later segments (before and after the evening's dream work ), Pierre...

Synopsis Pierre leads the Noetic Society Parmenides study group through another session of study. Lately we've been taking a break from the Parmenides, going through Proclus' Theology of Plato (*) instead, in order to see how Proclus lays out the 14 orders of gods implied in the Parmenides. Today we read Book 5, Chapter 38, and Hyp 1 of Parmenides. Gina started the talk with trying to answer how difference was generated, how does it come about in Plato's Parmenides Hypothesis 3. We returned to...

Synopsis Another great Saturday morning coffee with Pierre. Personally, this is my favorite kind of Saturday: No dreams. No degradation into political discussion. Just pure philosophy -- Midwifery/Pathologos, Iliad, Parmenides. Highlights Bradley kicks it off: Why do souls want to identify with (inherently false) images of Self? DarleneA's response (in Pierre's Facebook group) to Pierre's “Letter from Alexandros” with her own dream and questions (see her letter below) Homer's Iliad Are the...

Dialogue(s): parmenides Chapters: hyp4 Synopsis Pierre leads another great Friday night discussion with the NS. He opens with the query: Given the countless amount of suffering, what kind of universe (or Cosmos) do we live in that would allow for that? And why? Given that this suffering is a natural consequence of the pathologos: what is the purpose of allowing pathologos? Depending on the answer we get, then what can we conclude? (We all try various answers which are basically variations on...
